NYFW Misha Collection Spring 2017

image

Australian designer Michelle Aznavorian behind Misha Collection presented a stunning show which opened with supermodel Jourdan Dunn. Her sexy silhouettes are inspired by the party scene from Studio 54, New York’s popular night club in the 70s and fashion icons such as Iman, Jerry Hall and Bianca Jagger.

Sleek and sophisticated, her collection showcased lace and feather trimmed dresses, leather bodycon shifts, silk pantsuits, metallic ensembles and shimmering gold fringed slips to femme fatale red and leopard print trench coats. Jourdan Dunn closed the show with a sparkling draped silver dress with a daring high slit. These red carpet worthy outfits are perfect for the It girl who wants to make at grand entrance at every party.

It’s no wonder celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Alessandra Ambrosio, the Kardashians and Rosie Huntington-Whitely are fans of the label. Her star studded list now extends to Olivia Culpo, Whitney Port and Alana Hadid who attended the show.

If you’d like to get your hands on her ready to wear pieces, they are available at luxury retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom Revolve and Shopbop . Get ready to add some glamour and sparkle to your wardrobe!

Charles Youssef

CFDA awardee Charles Youssef presented his Fall/Winter 2016 collection at Milk Studios during New York Fashion Week. His label represents the metropolitan, modern woman and emphasises on elegance, form and function. Set in a dreamy landscape, his fall collection exuded ethereal beauty and luxury balanced with the minimalistic, pleated style of Japanese origami.
His attention to detail, construction and tailoring is absolutely impeccable! Dramatic voluminous shapes, billowy sleeves, full flowing skirts were paired with nipped waists to accentuate the female form.

For his fall collection he used mostly white to add a refreshing contrast to black and shades of indigo, purple, grey and fuchsia. Satin skirts were paired with cashmere sweaters, crisp white collared shirts with tailored pants and dresses with exquisite pleated detailing and patterns.

I loved the structured origami inspired white coats and the white, purple and black colour blocked dress with organza sleeves. Which one of the outfits caught your eye? Let me know in the comments below.

NYFW Desigual Spring 2017

Vibrant and fearless, Desigual’s latest collection shown at New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2017 embodies the free spirit of global travelers and strong women who traveled to remote places to fight for their personal freedom and left their legacy for women in the 21st century.

Cultural influences from around the world are beautifully integrated into their designs such as ethnic motifs, macrame and crochet knits, bohemian prints and chinoiserie florals.

There are 48 looks in this year’s collection that comprises of ready to wear separates.  From the ethnic ruffle military jacket over a crochet jeweled-bee-embroidered gown to the indigo-dyed long cardigan over a tie-dye maxi dress, the collection portrays the vast territories of a great adventure with the eternal magic of traveling. The models wore Snapchat filters as their makeup looks, completing their resort collection with a playful vibe.

If you are a huge fan of traveling in style, you can’t walk away from Desigual’s Spring Summer 2017 collection. What I love about their ensembles is that they are so easy to mix and match to portray your individual style.

Speaking of inspirational women from around the world, I was fortunate enough to meet Miss USA 2016 Deshauna Barber and Miss Universe 2015 herself – Pia Alonzo at the fashion show! As I come from the Philippines, I am so proud of her for winning the crown. It was a wonderful start to my New York Fashion Week adventure!

Polish Fashion Week and Interview with Nigel Barker

The Polish American Fashion Foundation in New York held a fantastic fashion show in the New Museum last September during New York Fashion Week to showcase the works of young and talented Polish designers on an international stage. The foundation hopes to encourage young designers and develop the future of Polish fashion both in Poland and abroad.

The event attracted many photographers and fashion icons, including talented celebrity photographer Nigel Barker whom I had the chance  to interview! He talked about how much he supports the Polish fashion scene and how he’s also planning to making a movie and writing a cookbook with his mother! Can’t wait to see it. I was so thrilled to have this once in a lifetime opportunity as I am a big fan of America’s Next Top Model, that show was an inspiration and learning curve for me when I pursued a career in fashion and modeling.

Three designers, the duo Paprocki & Brzozowski, Viola Spiechowicz and MIA presented their Spring 2016 collections. Paprocki & Brzozowski’s collection with its elegant silk dresses, flowing chiffon skirts and brocade suits was inspired by the Renaissance.

Dramatic voluminous shapes, white and pastel shades were a constant theme for Viola Spiechowicz’s label, a clean minimalist approach for spring. She uses nettle, a unique material for her fabric as it helps hold the outfits’ shape better.

MIA rocked it out with a sleek collection using mostly black and white with clean cut lines. Their collection was inspired by architecture as you can see from the modern construction of the outfits.

I hope you like the designs from this inspiring fashion show! I noticed that the Polish have a refined and minimalist taste in fashion. I’m forward to seeing more Polish designers showcasing their work on the runway in the future!

Met Gala 2016: Manus X Machina Press Preview

The Met Ball is one of the most star-studded and glamorous events of the year where celebrities, influential fashion icons and designers attend the unveiling of the Costume Institute’s new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I was lucky enough to attend the press preview in the morning before the gala. This year’s theme for the exhibition is called Manus X Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology.

image

Anna Wintour and museum curator Andrew Bolton gave an opening speech to tell us more about the the exhibition. Manus X Machina explores the co-relationship of couture that is made by hand (manus) and the machine (Machina).

image

Manus X Machina shows the history of how fashion has evolved over the years, from the founding of hand made haute couture, the invention of the sewing machine which has helped with the mass production of clothes, to the present day when technological advances such as 3D printing, laser cutting and computer graphics are used to create couture and ready-to-wear fashion.

image

The collection of 90 stunning ensembles features a diverse range of outfits from handcrafted haute couture,  to 3D printed designs from the top fashion labels in the world such as Christian Dior, Chanel, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Alexander McQueen.

image

At the entrance, a magnificent Chanel wedding dress with a gold studded 20 feet long train made a grand impression. The dress is made of scuba knit while the baroque design on the train was hand drawn by Karl Lagerfeld and then digitally manipulated to create a randomised, pixelated pattern.

Other haute couture ensembles on display are adorned with hand-sewn embellishments, appliqués, sequins, feathers and flowers and excellent craftsmanship.

image

A great example are the ethereal Venus and Janun gowns from Christian Dior shown on the left that are hand appliquéd with tulle petals and hand embroidered with sequins. The Alexander McQueen dress on the right is decorated with beaded silver paillettes that were sewn by hand onto the dress.

image

Chanel had another breathtaking, ethereal wedding gown on display which is covered with at least 2500 handmade camellias and ostrich feathers, all sewn onto the dress by hand!

There are a wide range of futuristic dresses as well such as the gold metallic “Kaikoku” Floating dress designed by Hussein Chalayan. It is remote controlled on wheels, allowing it to float on the floor and release 50 crystal “pollen spores.”

The spiky, out-worldly headpiece and bolero ensembles befittingly entitled as ” Atmospheric Reentry” by Japanese designer Maiko Takeda were so fascinating to look at and reminded me of a science fiction movie. Maiko Takeda was also present at the preview, wearing another one of her mind-blowing headpieces. She explained that despite its futuristic appearance, the designs are made of hand-cut acetate fringes and acrylic squares that are all assembled by hand.

image

One of the outstanding ensembles that caught my eye is this “bird dress” designed by Iris Van Herpen. It is made from laser cut silicone “feathers”  that are stitched onto the outfit by hand, to create a magnificent cloak that a fantasy character would wear in a movie.

image

Gareth Pugh turned the humble drinking straw into a work of art, by embroidering hundreds of straws onto his outfits. That’s taking the idea of recycling everyday, overlooked items unto another level of awesomeness!

Alexander McQueen’s stunning “Cape Feather Dress,” designed my Sarah Burton was  inspired by the patterns on a moth’s wing. Although it looks as if the exquisite pattern was digitally printed, it was actually made up of thousands of feathers of varying colors, each and every feather being cut and stitched by hand onto the dress.

image

These are just a few of the examples of the fascinating and remarkable designs on display. It was enlightening to learn more about the evolution of fashion. I could only imagine the hours of hard labour and artistic direction behind every outfit.

image

To visit the exhibition, look for the Robert Lehman Wing and Anna Wintour Costume Center at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is only open to the public from May to August 14.  I am sure you will be enchanted by not only the beauty of these works of art, but you will also appreciate to learn more about the history of haute couture and the construction of every outfit. It is a must see for all fashionistas and aspiring fashion designers to get inspired!

Rocky Gathercole Fall 2016 Art Hearts Fashion

Hollywood designer Rocky Gathercole ended the finale of Art Hearts Fashion Week with big bang!

The Filipino designer renowned for his outrageous, avant garde designs dazzled the audience with his Fall/Winter 2016 collection of a golden mirage of fantasy pieces inspired by Greek and Roman mythology.

Models strutted down the runway in a glamorous array of works of art, from larger than life headpieces in the shape of golden Aries horns, Minnie Mouse ears to glittery cage corset dresses and outlandish bustiers embellished with dragons, cobras and firebirds.

He also designed some sexy intricately beaded bodysuits with gold fringes that moved with mesmerising perfection as the models sashayed down the runway. His stunning dresses also had full tiered skirts and elaborate metallic bustier decorations.

The men looked like fierce Roman gladiators, with laurels on their heads and golden chains hanging on their buff bodies. One of them wore a huge shoulder shield and a golden deer skull over his black shorts.

The finale dress was a showstopper, a full length costume of a beautiful lace gown and an extravagant golden Phoenix headpiece complete with wings.

I have never been so amazed by a fashion show, every outfit was so extraordinary, exquisitely crafted and larger than life. They look like they belong to a fantasy Hollywood movie about Gods and warriors. You have to see the outfits to believe it. I’m so blessed to have witnessed a visual reverie of legends come to life.

Stello Official Fashion Show

Stello Official brought us to the far East with their latest collection called Yuki-Onna. The dynamic collection is inspired by Japanese fashion, with metallic samurai-like silhouettes complete with shoulder pads and spiked accessories. Some of the sheer dresses are embellished with oriental floral motifs and patterns.

Flowing pants, kimono-style ensembles, structured bustiers were also part of the collection. The use of cut-outs and high slits added a sensuous element to the outfits. The color palette of black, gold, red and silver made a strong impact with the use of  lustrous leather, silk, lace and metallic fabrics. The men also wore tailored pants with metallic jackets.  The model’s sleek hairstyles were accented with chopsticks that twisted their hair into elegant half up-dos.

A memorable moment was the appearance of a contortionist who walked on the runway with her body bent over backwards at a steep 45 degree angle so her hands touched the floor, something that I thought was humanly impossible.

The collection blends sensuality and femininity with a tough edge. It made a fashion statement that challenged the idea of Asian fashion – it doesn’t have to be conservative, it can be elegant, flowing and provocative at the same time.

Mimi Tran Art Hearts Fashion

Vietnamese fashion designer Mimi Tran showcased her Fall Winter 2016 Optical Illusion collection at Art Hearts Fashion Week. Mimi Tran grew up in Paris and her Vietnamese heritage created a sophisticated influence of both east and west in her designs.

Her collection exuded elegance and Parisian chic while accentuating the female figure. I love her attention to detail as the dresses were exquisitely embellished with lace, sequins, beads and floral appliques to create beautiful patterns which is probably how the collection got its name.

Solid shades of royal blue, gold and the bright oriental floral motifs accentuated the primary color black, which is also the color that the French love to wear. Fine fur stoles and long leather gloves completed the look of  timeless glamour.

For the finale, Miss new York walked out in an understated yet elegant white lace wedding gown.

What are your favorite looks from the show? Let me know in the comments below.

Catch Michelle

London fashion designer Mihaela Taleaga presented her fashion label Catch Michelle, an eclectic mix of avant garde and ready to wear designs at Art Hearts Fashion Week at Angel Orenzanz Foundation.

Inspired by Sigmund Freud and surrealism movements, she has transformed her dreams into abstract paintings and prints on her fabrics. The imagery on the paintings and prints on her clothes are provocative and whimsical all at the same time.

Her current Fall/Winter 2016 collection “Dream Walker” comprised of bright colors, strong pastels and her surreal paintings that created interesting patterns on the outfits. Oversized sweaters, dramatic sleeves, textured knits, tailored pants and voluminous skirts added another dimension of complex shapes and silhouettes.

The models wore vivid impressionist make up, as if their faces are the designer’s canvas and enlarged artist tools as accessories to complete the look.

Catch Michelle made a bold, thought-provoking fashion  statement as her collection on the show looked like intriguing walking works of art. I couldn’t help but take a second look at her outfits to wonder about the meaning of her surreal prints.  What are your thoughts?

Walter Mendez Fall 2016

13237829_10208186830481242_8247746909685187906_n

Walter Mendez captivated the audience with his stunning collection of  evening wear. As the svelte models glided down the runway in elegant, sweeping gowns, mysterious black lace masks and sparkling tiaras, I felt as if I was transported back in time to a royal ball in Venice.

.

The magnificent gowns accentuated the female curves with nipped waists that flared out into sweeping mermaid trains and shorter hemlines with flirty flounces. Billowy capes and extravagant origami folds elevated the dramatic effect of some of the dresses.

All of the dresses look so opulent with the swathes of  lush silk, lace and brocade fabric in rich shades of  striking red, elegant black, deep indigo, glittering golds and yellows. Elaborate lace, glittering crystal and gold embellishments in baroque patterns added another element of granduer.

The magnificent gowns accentuated the female curves with nipped waists that flared out into sweeping mermaid trains and shorter hemlines with flirty flounces. Billowy capes and extravagant origami folds elevated the dramatic effect of some of the dresses. Some of the more seductive dresses had translucent bustiers and bodysuits decorated with strategically crystals and high slits.

I can clearly see that Walter Mendez celebrates the femininity and empowerment of women with his  glamourous designs that flatter the female form. Every dress was so exquisite that it looked as if it was made for a queen or a Hollywood star.

It’s no wonder why he is one of next top designers in Los Angeles and has dressed celebrities such are Jennifer Lopez and Selena Gomez for red carpets.
